| literally wrote the book on California appeals as the principal author of the leading treatise on California appellate procedure, The Rutter Group's "California Practice Guide: Civil Appeals and Writs." A former partner in California's largest appellate law firm, Horvitz & Levy, he has three decades of experience in appellate litigation. He has argued 11 cases in the California Supreme Court, and dozens in the California Courts of Appeal and Ninth Circuit. He is also a California State Bar Certified Appellate Specialist.
In 2011, Jon received California Lawyer magazine's "Attorney of the Year" (CLAY) award and was also named one of the Recorder's "Attorneys of the Year" for his work on the Al-Haramain case. In 2010, he was featured as one of ten "Lawyers Who Helped Shape a Decade" in the Daily Journal, which also named him one of California's top 100 lawyers in 2008. He has been selected in the field of appellate law for inclusion in the 2011 and 2012 editions of "Best Lawyers in America," which also named him "Appellate Lawyer of the Year" for Oakland, California. He regularly appears on the list of the top 100 Northern California "Super Lawyers." Jon is also the author of The Right vs. The Right to Die, a nonfiction account of the Terri Schiavo case, in which he participated as one of the attorneys representing Michael Schiavo. Jon teaches California Appellate Process at Hastings College of the Law and has served as a court-appointed mediator for the First Appellate District's appellate mediation program. He received his J.D. from Hastings College of the Law, where he was Associate Editor of the Hastings Law Journal and graduated Order of the Coif. His Bachelor of Arts is from the University of California at Irvine.
